Build A Bear Workshops Inc. was founded in 1997 by Maxine Clark. She has served on the board of directors when the company was incorporated in 2000. The popularity of company was so immense that by the end of 2006 there were nearly 300 Build A Bear Workshop stores worldwide. These included company owned stores in the US, United Kingdom and Canada along with the franchised stores in Europe, Asia and Australia. Since the popularity of the company was so great Clark launched new addition to retail entertainment in 2004 called Friends 2B Made. This branch of the store is designed for kids with primary focus on girls.

In 2001 a bear workshop was named a retail innovator company following with the title of “Hottest Retailers” in 2004. “Workshop Portfolio Company of the Year” was a title that the company received in 2005 while the greatest success for Clark came in 2006 when she was induced in the Junior Achievement National Business Hall of Fame.
